Sock Puppets

Sock puppets are one of the easiest things to make as a family. It’s a great way to spend some time together while letting your imaginations run wild. Why not even put on a sock puppet show when they’re finished?

If you have some odd socks lying around (and I know I’m not the only one whose washing machine eats them!), then why not give it a go. Simply follow the step by step guide below.

What You’ll Need

  • Socks
  • Scissors
  • Glue (hot glue guns are the best and have the quickest drying times
  • Googly eyes
  • Tissue paper
  • Mini pom poms
  • Pipe cleaner
  • Mixed fabrics
  • Beads

Step 1

Mark out where you would like to put the eyes and the nose on the sock.

Tip – It helps to put the sock on your hand while you do this.

Step 2

Using glue, stick on the googly eyes and pom pom nose. Why not add some lips too or a tongue!

Step 3

Glue on hair – made from either strips of tissue paper or ready crinkled paper.

Step 4

You can make earrings for your sock puppet using 2 pieces of coloured pipe cleaner and 2 beads. Simply thread the bead onto the pipe cleaner, bend into a loop and twist the ends to secure.

Step 5

Make accessories and arms from cardboard, tissue paper or fabric and stick on the sock with glue.

Step 6

Add eyelashes by cutting 4 small 1 inch strips of coloured card and glue to the sock, just above the googly eyes.

Step 7

If you’re not using a hot glue gun, you’ll need to allow drying time. This varies depending on the glue but will generally be 1-2 hours.

Finished!

Once dry, your sock puppets are now ready for a socket puppet show!
