Toffee Apples

This year was the first time we’d ever made toffee apples and I have to say it was great fun (and sticky, very sticky!) We learnt the hard way that the secret to making good toffee apples is actually a thinner rather than thicker layer of toffee. I’ve popped what we used and how we made them below. But first, a few more tips.

Tips

  • If the toffee starts to harden and set, simply heat the bowl up in the microwave in 10 second bursts.
  • The apples need to be at room temperature. We keep ours in the fridge and this caused the toffee to set almost instantly on our first attempt.
  • If you’re adding sprinkles, do this straight away. If you wait till all 6 apples are coated, it’s highly likely that the toffee will be too hard for the sprinkles to stick to.
  • Use 2 dessert spoons to help you coat the apples and smooth the toffee. Keep the spoons in a cup of hot water when not being used.

Ingredients

  • 250g dairy toffee sweets
  • 6 apples
  • Wooden skewers
  • Sprinkles (optional)

All of these ingredients were bought from Asda in my usual online shop and were sold as a Toffee Apple bundle.

How to Make

5 apples with wooden skewers in on a baking paper lined tray

Step 1

Line a tray or plate with baking paper. Place a skewer in the centre of each apple and put onto the baking tray.

A bowl of melted toffee with 3 spoons

Step 2

Unwrap all the toffee sweets and place in a heat proof bowl. Melt in the microwave in 30 second bursts (approximately 1 1/2 minutes in total should be enough).

Step 3

Use the spoons to help you coat the toffee on the apples and then add sprinkles!
