Top 6 Books for a 6 Year Old
Reading with Bruce is my favourite part of the day. Every evening after bathtime, we sit on his bed together and choose 2 stories. Since starting school and becoming a much more confident reader, Bruce usually chooses his school reading book for himself and one from our collection for me to read.
I thought I'd share 6 of our favourite reads from over the past few months. If any spark your interest, why not head down to your local library or book store and see if they have one in stock?
1. The Bolds' Great Adventure by Julian Clary
This is a such a funny and creative book. There are a few more 'Bold' books in the series but this particular one was bought for £1 last year with our World Book day voucher (how awesome is that!) It's quite a chunky little read so can be split into a few chapters each night. The book is great for engaging a child's imagination but will have parents chuckling too. It's about a family of hyena's who travel all the way from Africa to live in the English town of Teddington.
2. Wonky Donkey by Craig Smith
This is a book that seems to make almost all children laugh. It became famous after a video of a lovely Scottish Grandma reading it to her Grandchild went viral. It's a fairly quick read (depending on how well you manage to say the descriptive rhymes!) but is certainly one of my son's favourites. That's possibly due to the fact that he gets less tongue-tied than me when he reads it!
3. Bee Boy Clash of the Killer Queens by Tony de Saulles
This is a more recent discovery of ours and one that we found in our local library. It's one that I read to Bruce over about a week. Bee boy is a book about young Melvin, a boy who keeps bees. One day something strange happens and he becomes bee boy, half bee and half boy. His mission, to protect his bee hive! Fun read. We're looking forward to reading the next in the series.
4. Robot Stop by Adam Bestwick
Another short read that Bruce now enjoys to read to me. Robot Stop is about a boy called Robbie who's dad is an inventor. He creates a super useful robot to help out with all sorts of things around the house. Robbie, however, has another idea for the robot which doesn't exactly go as planned!
5. The Fantastic Flying Journey by Gerald Durrell
Now this book holds a special place in my heart because this was the book that my mum read to me as a child. It is a little more complex than our other reads but the story and the illustrations are just beautiful. The book tells the story of 3 children who go on an adventure with their great uncle in a spectacular hot air balloon all around the world. Bruce has learnt so much about lots of animals and places in the world so I would highly recommend this. It's a long read and took a few weeks each evening but it really sparks those little imaginations.
6. The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson
Well I couldn't do our favourite 6 without a Julia Donaldson book in it! We have all but a couple of the Julia Donaldson books and I would highly recommend them all. From 'The Smartest Giant in Town' to 'Zog and the Flying Doctors'. Each are beautifully written and the illustrations from Axel Scheffler are simply magical. I do have to say though, if you only have one, it has to be 'The Gruffalo'!
There they are, my current top 6 books for a 6 year old. Hope it helps you find some new reads to enjoy with your little ones. Let me know if you have any recommendations in the comments below.
